Clubs at GSS

Art Club

The Art Club is open to all students who are interested in Art at GSS. The students meet once a week to create art pieces that vary from drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. There are often tutorials where new media and techniques are shared by the group members. The students will work on individual projects of their choice or the club may work on group projects like murals, stained glass panels, and designs for posters. So if you are creative, like to explore art styles, and want to express your inner artist, this is the club for you!

Breakfast Club

Breakfast Club runs from 8:10 - 8:45 a.m. every day in Room 305 (the upstairs Family Studies room).  This initiative is supported by Niagara Nutrition Partners and businesses in the community. Everyone who wishes can start the day with a nutritious breakfast.  Donations are always needed. There is no charge. Everyone is welcome. If you wish to volunteer and gain community service hours, please see Ms. Coppinger or Mr. Silverthorne to sign up!

Deca

Is an international association of high school and college students and teachers of marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality, and marketing sales and service.  As part of this club, you would prepare for and compete in a business competition held in first semester. Successful competitors will travel to Toronto to compete in the Provincial championships.  Last year, our DECA team competed at the International competition in Disney, Florida! See Ms. Coppinger if you are interested. Time is of the essence. You have to sign up early in the semester.

Drama

GSS Drama features a fun and physical theatre program with lots of opportunities to get involved during and after school. Our twice a year evening Cabarets feature the best of student work. Our Improv Team competes in various tournaments and has performed in Ottawa at the National Arts Centre as part of the National Improv Finals for several years. Our Sears Drama Festival Show is a one act where students and teachers combine their creative powers to put on an original show.  This year, students will be performing a co-production with St Catharines Collegiate which will be entered into the National Theatre School of Canada Festival  as well as being performed as the only Canadian selection in the American High School Theatre Festival at the world reknowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.

Eco / Outdoors club

If you are passionate about the environment and have a desire to create awareness, make positive change, or to simply spend time in nature, come meet with us Tuesdays at lunch.  Enthusiasm and gratitude for our natural environment are the only requirements. Please speak to Ms. Johnston for further details.

Fashion Club

If you are interested in talking about fashion, putting on a fashion show, or actually sewing a project, see Ms. Coppinger.  We are thinking of offering a Fashion course at GSS next year, but need to see how popular the option might be.

French Club

Bonjour!  If you have an interest in French culture and language, French Club is for you! Come join us at lunch to immerse yourself in the French way of life.  We’ll look at and experience French cuisine, French music and French holidays. French Club is also a great way to improve your speaking skills. Come join us as we set up potential field trips to truly experience “French culture”.  Meeting day at lunch is TBD.

Positive Spaces Project (PSP)

Formerly known as the Gay Straight Alliance, the Positive Space Project is a group that meets on a weekly basis to promote acceptance of yourself, those around you and ultimately loving who you are. As well as touching upon LGBTQ topics and issues, we will also be discussing mental health awareness, anti-bullying, suicide awareness and how to truly understand that you’re not alone.

Improv Team

Impulse. Teamwork. Trust. Risk and more than a few laughs…Improvisation continues to thrive at GSS! For 15 years now, GSS has competed in the Canadian Improv Games – a coast to coast tournament the likes of which you’ll not find anywhere else. A Competitive team is put together through auditions in early fall. Often, the talent pool is so vast that a Development team is also created. Think this is for you? If your gut tells you that, listen to it and we’ll see you on the stage next fall.

Vocal Ensemble

The Vocal Ensemble is a group open to anyone who has an interest in singing.  Repertoire for the Vocal Ensemble consists of a wide variety of genres from classical to popular. School Reach

Reach is a Canada-wide competition that is modelled after the trivia game show “Reach for the Top”.  Students compete in teams of 4 to see which team can be fastest on the buzzer and answer the most questions correctly.  Questions are based on facts you are learning in your classes, current events, and general knowledge trivia. We have a Junior team for Grade 9’s and 10’s and a Senior team for Grade 11’s and 12’s.  Everyone is welcome, whether you think you know a lot or not. You may be surprised - and you’ll definitely have fun!

Student Council

The student council is a group of student leaders who are elected by the student body and are responsible for planning the spirit activities and extracurricular experiences in the school for the year. These activities include semi-formal dances, assemblies, etc… They hold junior representative elections in the fall and senior elections in the spring. They meet on Wednesdays after school in Room 104.

Math Club

Math Club offers students an opportunity to work on challenging mathematics problems throughout the year. The time is used to improve problem solving skills, and prepare for competitions such as the University of Waterloo contests, and the DSBN Math Olympics.

Student Well-Being Team

The Student Well-Being Team is a student driven club who identify areas where student health and wellness could be supported, then implement a plan. Previous initiatives have included a Wellness Week around exams with lunchtime events and exam preparation packages for Grade 9 students, the implementation of a Peer Mediation group, and a grade 9 Activities Assembly.

Peer Mediators are grade 12 students who receive training on how to resolve student conflict in a healthy manner. To become a peer mediator you must successfully complete an application and interview in your grade 11 year.

PREFECTS

Reliable. Responsible. Ready to Take Action. As ambassadors to GSS, PREFECTS work very closely with Administration and are oftencalled upon to support “things that pop up”. Some examples are: registration, Grade 9 BBQ, Photo Day, Parent/Teacher Interviews, Open House and Graduation. Adopt-A-Family, MADD and Coldest Night of the Year are also some of the other initiatives we participate in. Students may apply to become a PREFECT in the spring. There are also mandatory weekly meetings.

Yearbook Photographers and Journalists

If you have a knack for photography or telling a story then this group could be just for you. We need photographers to take photos of sports and other school related events throughout the year. Also, we need interviewers to talk to individuals that have stood out and done great things at GSS. If interested, come see Mr. McMath in room 224.
